[ALSO WORKS WITH WINDOWS 7]
The only eye-catching feature feature in Vista was Dreamscene but Microsoft pulled it down in Windows 7 and 8. There are many tweaks on the internet that promise to enable Dreamscene but none have worked for me. So I figured this out:
One can use the VLC media player to create a live wallpapers for the legacy desktop.

One can use the VLC media player to create a live wallpapers for the legacy desktop.
Here's how:
- Download VLC Media Player
- After installing VLC, go to Tools > Preferences.
- Select Video tab and select DirectX Video Output from the Output drop-down menu.
- Click Save and close VLC
- Now find the video clip you want to use and play it in VLC.
- When it is running, right click and select Video, DirectX wallpaper!
Here are some things that you would want to clarify:
- The RAM used is less than 24 KB [Picture slideshow occupies 18 KB]
- There is no change in performance as you can even use heavy applications like After Effects and Outlook together.
- I would state the minimum requirement as : 1 GB RAM, min. 2 MB cache available and of course a Windows 7 or 8 PC.
