Windows 8 is not very different from its predecessor Windows 7 in terms of Compatibility. It can run almost all programs that the previous OS could run.
But since Windows 8 has a completely new and creative look, here are some essential windows 8 applications:

Desktop:

Office Suite 2013 : This Consumer Preview has the ability to do almost everything an office guy would want to do with ease.
It has many UI changes that optimizes it for Tablets but its equally mind-blowing on a PC or Laptop. Try it out here!

Other applications like Picasa, Mozilla Firefox and uTorrent work perfectly fine with Windows 8.
Microsoft Security Essentials comes integrated in Windows 8.


Metro Apps:

Chrome : Chrome stands out even here, in the Tile UI. It just makes    
IE 10 look small in its own environment! It is a full-screen browser with features like switch between tabs and send data over WiFi to Mobile Chrome! Plus many more things can be done with Chrome Metro App [discussed here]. Download from the Dev Channel

BOX : This File-Sharing app poses a serious threat to Microsoft's own SkyDrive. It has a easy to use UI and also opens files using the default extension opener.

Fruit Ninja : This classic AppStore app has released a Lite version for Windows 8 which is a great pass time.

Wikipedia : The official Wikipedia app is pretty neat and follows every rule of being a true Metro app.
