CAN THE WINDOWS RT TABLET RUIN THE iPad MARKET?
That was the first question a person would think about.
Well in a way it has greatly affected Apple, but not as much as to pose a threat to the iPad series.
An year before the original iPad was released, Steve Jobs had quoted, "Tablet PCs are a bad idea."
He converted this bad idea into a successful gamble. Millions bought the iPad but soon realized that they could have got something better. So here are some reasons why any version of the iPad is inferior to Windows RT. Some Apple fanboys have had arguments with me before and so I will compare both the products throughout to make things clear.
The tablet I choose is the first Windows RT tablet, Surface RT.
Build
The Surface RT has an extremely superior build quality. It is made of Magnesium using the VaporMg technology. It looks and feels elegant. The iPad on the other hand is made of Aluminium. Cheap and easily available and also prone to scratches (Apple Fanboy: You can purchase the scratch remover gel). Yes we can but why not buy something that already has the technology of preventing scratches.
The Surface also has a VaporMg kickstand built into the device. (Apple Fanboy: You get kickstands from Apple and other Manufacturers for iPad) But they are expensive and not a bit as durable as Microsoft's.
Microsoft has kept the screen size 10.6" making it suitable for both landscape and portrait mode. The iPad has a lower screen size of 9.5".
Even Apple employees say that the iPad though lighter than Surface RT, feels heavier because of the density and weak placement of internal parts. The iPad is thinner though by a very small margin.
WINNER: Microsoft Surface RT
Hardware and Ports
The iPad is a joke when compared to Surface RT in this category.
The processor built into iPad (A6X) is respectable but is clocked at 1.4 GHz Dual Core and 200 Mhz Quad Core graphics. The Surface, it has the best tablet processor, NVidia Tegra 3 Quad Core clocked at 1.8 GHz on ARM CPUs. For a normal guy that's a lot of information. So, simply put Surface has a much more superior processor compared to the iPad.
The RAM in iPad is 1 GB while in Surface is 2 GB.
Surface has 21 MB cache memory while iPad has none.
Surface offers two levels of storage (32 GB and 64 GB) while the iPad has 3 (16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB). Both are NTFS Flash Memory.
Coming to the ports. Dear iPad, you lose :) . The Surface has a USB Port, MicroSD card slot (upto 64 GB), Micro HDMI slot, the Magnetic charging port and the MagMech Cover Port.
iPad has a lighting connector which, unlike its name, is not very fast to transfer data.
Surface has a 5 MP front facing camera which supports 720p Recording. The iPad has a 5 MP camera too but somehow the iPad's camera is better at clicking still images. Video recording is the same.
The iPad has a superior front facing camera of 1.2 MP while the Surface has a 0.7 MP camera for video calls.
WINNER: Microsoft Surface RT
Operating System
Many state that Windows RT is an unfinished OS which will be crushed by Windows 8. Well they are forgetting that compared to the iOS, Windows RT is far superior.
The Modern UI has live tiles that makes productivity easier. I can check my unread mail without opening the Mail App and even check my messages and notification from the App Tile itself. iOS was well received in the iPhone 3GS but it has lost its innovation with the same static app icons and horrible multitasking. Windows has always been the best multitasker.
Many of the traditional Windows System Tools like Control Panel and Regedit is available and this makes the iOS look like a "made for dumb people device".
The App snapping also shames the iPad. I can Video Call over Skype and still continue writing my document or browse the web and chat with my buddies without changing tabs or apps.
Technically Windows 8 is a mash-up of Java, HTML 5, CSS, VBA, .Net Framework and Visual C++ while the iPad has a formidable UNIX base running on a custom firmware.
WINNER: Without any bias, I'd go for both iOS and Windows RT
App Ecosystem
Apple boasts 650k apps in its store (over a span of 5-6 years). These are paid apps that have a "lite" counterpart. Windows Marketplace has 25,539 Apps(over the span of 3 months). These include paid apps that by compulsion have to provide a "try" option for a 4/7 day trial before purchase hence removing a clutter of trial apps.
Apps in Windows 8 are way more beautiful and also free from piracy (at least till today) because of the ARM processor that no one has unlocked till today. On the other hand iOS apps have grown old and developers fear that a legal jailbreak is fatal for their application to sell as per charts.
But on the whole iOS still has smoother apps and grabs its only spot in this comparison.
WINNER: Apple iPad
Support
This is what many people forget about, support. Apple has a good support staff but its promises are weak.
A device gets obsolete in less than 2 years. On the other hand, Microsoft has promised to support the Surface RT for 5 years. This encourages worried users to go for Surface rather than iPad.
VEDICT: Microsoft was quiet on its Surface RT sales because the Surface Pro is releasing soon which may completely ruin the iPad. Plus I haven't mentioned the pricing and the touch and type covers, all favouring Surface.
